Coconut Creek will begin offering a recreational Ultimate Frisbee league starting Jan. 6. Anyone older than 18 can play, even if they don’t live in the city.

The program will run at Hosford Park (4422 Coconut Creek Blvd.) on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. until Feb. 10. Residents pay $25 to play for the full season. Non-residents pay $30.

Players can also purchase per-game passes — $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents.

Ultimate Frisbee originated at a New Jersey high school in 1968, and has grown to include not only local pickup games and leagues, but also college-level and professional teams.

The sport’s popularity is on the rise across the country, including in South Florida. Players say they enjoy the game’s unique ability to build community. It’s played on a 120-yard field with teams of seven, both attempting to cross to the other side of the field with the disc.

Once a player catches a pass, they must plant one foot on the ground. They have 10 seconds to pass the Frisbee to a teammate, or must turn it over to their opponents.
