Despite largely positive Yelp reviews praising authentic Sichuan province dishes and a strong social media presence, a popular Chinese restaurant in Coral Springs was shut down last week after failing a state inspection.

Mainland China Bistro, at 2445 N. University Drive, was temporarily closed on Sept. 30 after state health inspectors found mold, rodent droppings and other sanitation violations throughout the establishment.

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation only issues emergency closures when violations pose an imminent threat to public health.

Though the restaurant passed its follow-up inspection on Oct. 1 and was allowed to reopen, inspectors cited several repeat violations, including raw chicken stored above cooked food and improper cooling practices — both of which can cause bacterial contamination and foodborne illness.

Records show similar issues were documented in inspections dating to September 2023.

Additional violations included a buildup of mold-like substance inside an ice bin — a recurring issue noted in past reports — an employee’s cell phone on a food-prep surface, and improper handwashing practices.
