Nicole Gonzalez-Cumberbatch formed The Motherhood Village in response to her own struggles as a mom — and to create a “one-of-a-kind” center for kids and parents.

What started as a community organization and support group for moms without a set location has now taken brick-and-mortar form in The Walk on University Drive in Coral Springs.

Gonzalez-Cumberbatch opened the location in April, and now, six months later, the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce will present her with its Rookie of the Year award at the Chamber’s Oct. 24 gala.

“Truly, it’s all the times when I hear, ‘Thank you, where have you been?’ that has been the most rewarding,” Gonzalez-Cumberbatch said. “Even when we’re like, ‘OK, guys, what’s next? What’s on the horizon for the next quarter? What are we going to do, you know, to get more people aware that we’re here. It’s the moms that say thank you. It’s the kids that feel safe.”

Gonzalez-Cumberbatch said she has a hard time describing what The Motherhood Village does since the space offers a lot. At its core, she said, it’s an indoor play center where children can play together, go to camp or partake in early-learning programs with educators while the parents can utilize a co-working space and cafe, as well as attend workshops.

She bills the business as “kid-friendly but mom-focused.”

“I had a financial advisor come in that I’m very close with,” Gonzalez-Cumberbatch said. “Her and an insurance broker came in, and they talked to women about finances for an hour, and the women came out saying, ‘Oh, my God, I learned so much.’ And again, their kids were playing safely nearby. That’s just not happening anywhere else.”

The business offers memberships starting at $65 a month and going up to $115 a month for members to take advantage of the services and amenities. They also offer a summer camp and drop-in rates for kids’ open play sessions.

Gonzalez-Cumberbatch’s experiences as a mom with a career motivated her to start her community group. When she had her son, who’s now in second grade, she was a vice president of finance.

“And then my son was born, and it just rocked me …” she said. “I was an accountant, and I had managed a team, right? And it just flowed. Then here I am with the little one, and nothing was flowing.”

She said she felt like she was drowning and became anxious, which she hadn’t experienced before.

“My own journey in that pushed me to say, ‘OK, how can I help other women kind of not go through this, not feel so lonely, and have more resources that I thought just weren’t out there for us to have,” she said.

She recalled one mom came in recently and started crying, saying she needed community and had heard about The Motherhood Village from her husband who had seen their sign.

Now that she has six months under her belt operating the brick-and-mortar space, Gonzalez-Cumberbatch said the next year will involve continuing to try to get the word out there.

Four years ago, back when The Motherhood Village was the name of Gonzalez-Cumberbatch’s community group and podcast, she briefly joined the Chamber of Commerce that’s now recognizing her for her new space.

“For them to see my evolution, to recognize it, and to know that, yes, I’m just six months in and still have a lot of work to do, but to recognize what I’ve been able to do, I’m very, very honored,” she said. “Because I think a lot of times when we’re in it, we don’t stop to smell the roses, right? We don’t realize, like, wow, this is a big accomplishment.”

While Gonzalez-Cumberbatch aspires to open more locations in the future, for now she’s said she honing the model at her current location before expanding.
