Coral Springs to vote on $3M in spending for schools, WiFi and more. What to know
Want to know what Coral Springs city officials are spending taxpayer money on? We went through documents to find out.
Commissioners are set to vote on over $3 million in contracts and proposals at their next official meeting, with items ranging from improved internet infrastructure to regular building upkeep.
Here are the items city commissioners are set to consider on Wednesday, March 25:
J.P. Taravella High School football field enhancements
New lighting and pathways projected to cost $1 million could be coming to the high school’s football field and track under a collaborative agreement between Coral Springs and the Broward County School Board.
The final vote has not been scheduled, as officials are waiting for the board’s full funding commitment, which would cover upgrades to the field, track, fencing, bleachers and press box. Meeting documents did not mention a cost estimate for the project.
If approved, it could be the beginning of a partnership between the city and schools, as City Commission workshop documents indicate that officials are exploring additional projects at James S. Hunt Elementary and Coral Glades High School.
Fiber optic internet expansion
Fire stations, parks and other city facilities will receive new and improved Internet infrastructure under a proposed $1.2 million agreement with Unitec Inc., according to City Commission documents.
The deal would expand a 2024 agreement with Unitec, as the original contract only covered fiber-optic Internet infrastructure installation at City Hall and the Public Safety Building. The company was more cost-effective than expected, leaving $1.2 million left over in allocated American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
Because the money expires at the end of 2026, officials requested a no-bid contract to continue working with Unitec to add or improve WiFi to over 20 facilities, including the Coral Springs Museum of Art and the water plant.
Officials will also be asked to approve a $475,000 increase to the city’s contract with Cisco, allowing the Information Technology department to purchase the hardware and software needed for the new WiFi network to function. A portion will also go toward contractors to assist city staff with installing these items.
Other purchases
City Commissioners will also vote on other expenditures, including:
- Bus shelter replacement by Naysac Corp. ($325,000)
- Sample Road parking lot resurfacing by M&M Asphalt Maintenance, Inc. ($265,265)
- Citywide fire alarm systems testing by Wiginton Corporation & Maritech Systems, Inc. ($150,000)
- Sod and installation services by Mullings Engineering Services and Odums Sod, Inc. ($150,000)
- Coral Springs Center for the Arts interior and exterior repainting by Eagle Painting ($84,599)
- Public Safety Building exterior repainting by Eagle Painting ($62,837)
- City Hall roof repainting by Hartzell ($57,800)
