Coral Springs’ main post office could be renamed in honor of the city’s late vice mayor.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz introduced House Resolution 8419 to the House of Representatives on Tuesday, April 21, asking the legislature to rename the NW 94th Avenue post office as the “Nancy Metayer Post Office Building” after the former vice mayor who championed inclusion and environmental stewardship in Coral Springs.

HR 8419 has the backing of 12 other elected officials, including Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL-10), Rep. Frederica S. Wilson (D-FL-24) and Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL-25). Five Republicans joined them, as well as former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL-20), who resigned on the same day as the resolution’s introduction.

The resolution was referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. In order to pass, it must be referred out of the committee and approved by the House and Senate before being signed by President Donald Trump.

Metayer was found dead in her home on April 1. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, is facing charges of premeditated murder and evidence tampering.
