The Coral Springs Police Department is hosting a free self-defense course in November for teenage girls and adult women.

The agency is organizing another one of its two-hour Self-defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange (S.A.F.E) courses geared toward teaching girls and women over the age of 13 basic physical defense and other strategies to keep themselves safe.

The event is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Sartory Hall Senior Center. Registration is free but limited, so sign up sooner rather than later.

The standardized S.A.F.E. program asserts “90% of self-defense is awareness, risk reduction and avoiding confrontation; and only 10% is physical.”

Coral Springs officers will teach “strategies, techniques, options and prevention” to identify and mitigate risks of violence.

To register, fill out a waiver for either an adult or minor participating in the class and send it to policetraining@coralsprings.gov.
