Meeting scheduled to discuss boosting enrollment at Coral Springs middle schools
Now that all Coral Springs middle schools have been saved from closures in the upcoming school year, the district is going back to the drawing board to figure out how to address underenrollment.
The community has now been invited to participate in another town hall at Coral Springs High School regarding a handful of under-capacity local middle schools as part as the district’s Redefining Our Schools initiative.
Broward County school officials have scheduled the meeting for Monday, Oct. 27, from 6-8 p.m. to discuss options for boosting enrollment at Forest Glen, Coral Springs, Ramblewood, Margate and Sawgrass Springs middle schools.
“This meeting is to discuss programmatic offerings at the schools,” according to the meeting notice. “The discussion will not include any recommended school boundary changes or school consolidations.”
The meeting comes roughly a month after Broward school board members hosted a town hall at the high school to discuss possibly closing or repurposing the aforementioned middle schools that have dealt with sluggish enrollment.
Officials identified Forest Glen Middle for possible closure, but a discussion at a school board meeting about a week after the town hall resulted in Forest Glen being removed from the chopping block, the Coral Springs News reported.
In lieu of closure, parents advocated for adding a specialized school for autistic students in one of the under-capacity middle schools and increasing popular programs such as Cambridge International, STEM instruction, dual language offerings, coding classes, technical skills tracks and more.
Conversations on these programs and other ways to increase enrollment are expected at the upcoming meeting, which is open to the public.
