Man kicks, spits on officer after bartender cuts him off, Coral Springs cops say
A 38-year-old man was arrested Oct. 14 at Moon Thai and Japanese restaurant after allegedly threatening staff and attempting to assault Coral Springs police officers.
Matthew Charles England faces four charges, including two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, after workers at the restaurant on Westview Drive reported an intoxicated customer was refusing to leave, according to police.
According to a witness interviewed by police, England entered the restaurant and ordered two alcoholic drinks from the bar. England then started to appear “wobbly and intoxicated,” so the bartender refused to serve him additional drinks and brought him water instead, officers wrote in an arrest report.
The witness said England responded by yelling slurs at the bartender and threatened the bartender with physical violence, according to the arrest report.
When the bartender called the police, England approached another Moon Thai employee and asked him for a drink, the arrest report says. When the employee placed a hand in front of him to create distance, England reportedly struck his hand, according to investigators.
England then attempted to follow the employee into the kitchen before officers arrived, police said.
After being escorted outside the restaurant, England refused to leave, and police described him “charging” at officers, who then pinned him against a wall to detain him, according to the arrest report. He continued to resist as they handcuffed and attempted to search him, police said.
During the arrest, he’s accused of spitting on one of the officers conducting the search and kicking the same officer in the genital area. England was placed in mouth and leg restraints and taken to Broward Health Coral Springs for medical clearance, then to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, according to police.
In addition to the two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, England was also charged with resisting arrest with violence and disorderly intoxication, police said.
Records show he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
