A child riding an e-bike was hospitalized after colliding with a Tesla on Monday, Nov. 3, in the 3800 block of North University Drive, Coral Springs Police say.

The child was airlifted to Broward Health North in critical condition, cops said. The nature of the injuries are unknown at this time, but according to a Coral Springs Police Department news release, they are not considered life-threatening.

The Tesla driver and passengers remained on the scene and cooperated with officers. No criminal charges are being filed , cops said.

The collision shut down all lanes from about 4:45 p.m., when the crash occurred, to 6:47 p.m., when police confirmed that they had reopened the road.

The crash happened about 1.5 miles from where another pedestrian was hit on Thursday, Oct. 30. That collision also shut down lanes for hours and sent one person to a hospital, according to police.

According to data from the Florida Traffic Safety Database, Coral Springs is on track to have fewer pedestrian and bicycle collisions in 2025 than in the two years prior.

The Coral Springs Police Department is reminding residents to familiarize themselves with state and local laws regarding e-bikes and scooters, ensure children are acting responsibly and require use of proper safety equipment.

The crash comes weeks after a city ordinance loosened restrictions on using the devices, also called “microtransit” on sidewalks in Coral Springs.
