Small plane crashes into lake in backyard of Coral Springs home. What we know
Two people have been confirmed dead by Coral Springs Police after a daylong investigation into a plane crash in the Windsor Bay neighborhood.
According to officials from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, the aircraft left Monday morning bound for Jamaica, carrying items for victims of Hurricane Melissa.
The plane went down at 10:19 a.m., Coral Springs Police said.
According to reports, the aircraft clipped a fence and several trees as it descended. Additional surveillance video shows the plane coming apart on impact with the water, spreading debris into residents’ backyards. The smell of jet fuel lingered for hours.
After an initial search early in the afternoon, Coral Springs deputy fire chief Mike Moser said that divers had not found any victims.
“We have not found an entire plane yet,” he told reporters. “We believe that it may be broken into smaller pieces; we don’t know yet.”
Then, in a 4 p.m. update, Coral Springs officials announced that two individuals died in the crash. Their identities have not yet been made public.
Divers were pulled from the water a short time later. Officials cited the amount of jet fuel in the lake, and recommended residents keep doors and windows closed and avoid spending time outside in order to stay clear of the fumes.
Flight records indicate that the aircraft was a 1976 Beechcraft King Air B100, owned by International Air Services Inc. Trustee., with prior flights out of Kentucky.
The investigation will continue into tomorrow.
