Broward will be the latest in a string of Florida counties installing vehicle registration renewal kiosks in Publix locations — including one in Coral Springs.

Traditional options such as in-person and online renewal are still available, but the machines have a speed advantage, as they don’t require waiting in line or for the registration sticker to come in the mail.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported kiosks will pop up in four other Publix stores in Hollywood, Coconut Creek, Plantation and Cooper City, according to a spokesperson for Broward Tax Collector Abbey Ajayi.

Where do the kiosks come from?

Neumo, a government technology company created under Arlington Capital Partners, operates the Florida MV Express kiosks. They also provide other products largely centering on self-service tax collection.

According to Neumo’s page about its kiosks, “End-to-end encryption protects transactions for confidentiality and compliance with government standards.”

What can (and can’t) the kiosks do?

The kiosk service is intended for conventional car and truck drivers. After a driver presents their information and payment, the machine produces a sticker and registration card that are required to be in the vehicle at all times.

There are a number of situations where drivers will be unable to use the kiosks. This includes:

  • Drivers with insurance, driver’s license or toll suspensions
  • Vehicles that require a new metal tag, or have a National Guard or personalized license plate
  • Parking permits and placards
  • Renewal for autonomous vehicles, government vehicles, semi-trucks and trailers, mobile homes or boats

What do I need to bring?

Drivers will need two things, according to the Broward County Tax Collector’s website:

  • Registration renewal notice PIN or the vehicle’s license plate number and birthdate of the first registrant
  • Payment method (credit and debit cards always accepted; cash only permitted at some locations)

How much does it cost?

The total cost depends on what kind of vehicle you have. A full list of state-level prices is available on the Florida Department of High way Safety and Motor Vehicles website. Overdue registrations incur an additional fee.

A 2.3% card service fee and $4.50 convenience fee applies to all transactions. This fee goes to Florida MV Express.

Where can I find a full list of renewal kiosk locations?

The kiosks are currently being set up in Broward and are not yet available. Find a registration renewal kiosk in Palm Beach or Miami-Dade online with this map.
