Want to get a greener thumb in the new year? This local group can help with that — and much more.

The Coral Springs Garden Club isn’t just for avid gardeners, according to club president Luanne Betz. It’s a space to learn more about the natural world in your backyard — and how to protect it.

“It’s turned into more of a community,” Betz said. “We have a lot more hands-on things than the previous generation. It’s evolved.”

Over the past few years, the club’s 80 members have planted gardens in several city parks, run a library-based seed exchange and toured places such as the Broward Recycling Center.

One of the gardens the Coral Springs Garden Club planted — a native pollinator garden in Whispering Woods Park — attracted a once-endangered butterfly and other insects that had not visted the space before.

Its next event is Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Northwest Regional Library. Project Perch’s Paul Kragh will speak about burrowing owls, a threatened species native to South Florida.

Burrowing owls are considered threatened in Florida, in large part because of aggressive development that destroys vulnerable habitats.
