BSO sergeant strangles woman, drags her on lawn in domestic incident, cops say
A 20-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff’s Office is accused of dragging a woman across a lawn then driving away with her until she convinced him to let her go during a domestic violence incident, according to the agency. -
Sgt. Scott Nida, 54, is charged with false imprisonment, domestic battery by strangulation and touch or strike battery, Broward court records show. His attorney information wasn’t available Jan. 9.
“Domestic violence is unacceptable, especially from someone who is sworn to uphold the law,” Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a statement. “When a sworn member is accused of this type of crime, they are held to the same standards as any member of the public.”
Law enforcement received a call about a domestic incident in Pompano Beach shortly after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, according to a BSO news release.
Detectives with the Special Victims Unit said they spoke with Nida and a woman, who told deputies she was trying to leave the home during a fight with Nida when he grabbed her arm.
She said he grabbed her face and neck, strangling her until she couldn’t breathe, before he pushed her to the ground and dragged her across the yard.
She got away from him and ran toward her vehicle until Nida caught up to her, then she said he pushed her into the passenger side and drove away until she persuaded him to release her, according to deputies.
Nida was arrested less than two weeks before his 21st anniversary working for the sheriff’s office. He was placed on unpaid administrative leave as the investigation is ongoing.
