A driver is accused of pointing a gun at another patron in a McDonald’s drive-thru in Coral Springs as both were trying to get in line to order food, according to police.

Francisco Cavalcante, 55, of Deerfield Beach, is facing a third-degree felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

The Coral Springs News reached out to Cavalcante’s attorney for comment Feb. 10 but did not immediately receive a response.

Multiple 911 callers told dispatchers on Feb. 6 that a man in a red SUV pulled a gun on another driver in the McDonald’s drive-thru on 7751 W. Sample Road, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Coral Springs police arrived shortly after 6 p.m. and interviewed a woman, who said she was in the drive-thru trying to order food when another driver, identified as Cavalcante, cut her off, police wrote. But Cavalcante told investigators the woman was the one who cut him off, the affidavit says.

The woman said they exchanged words, but she couldn’t understand Cavalcante, and he wouldn’t let her into the drive-thru line.

She said the man then got out of his SUV, unholstered a handgun and pointed it at her through the windshield, according to police. The woman said she was afraid for her life.

Cavalcante denied pointing the gun at her, saying she moved toward him in her car, and he “leaned his body to the left in order to display his handgun that was on his right hip,” officers wrote in the affidavit.

When police patted down Cavalcante, they reported finding a black Smith and Wesson Springfield handgun on his right hip, and a magazine in his left pocket.

A judge granted Cavalcante bond on the condition that he surrender all firearms. His defense filed a written not-guilty plea on his behalf Feb. 9, records show.
