The City of Coral Springs may be on the hook for over six figures in damages, nearly two years after a Coral Springs Police Department detective allegedly sideswiped a car, according to a recently filed lawsuit.

According to the complaint filed March 3, Broward County resident Ketline Fenelus was stopped in parking lot traffic at 7365 W. Sample Road on April 2, 2024, when her 2013 Nissan Pathfinder was struck by the side of Detective Christopher L. Wilson’s city-issued Ford pickup truck.

He was allegedly responding to a call at the time.

Fenelus sustained “serious and permanent” bodily injuries, the document states.

Her attorney, Thomas P. Barnett Jr. of Barnett Injury Law, wrote that Fenelus filed a claim with the city’s insurance provider, Florida Municipal Trust Insurance Company, on or about April 18, 2024, and that FMTIC acknowledged receipt and continued communicating with her during its investigation.

The city has “failed and refused” to resolve Fenelus’ claim, according to the complaint, resulting in the over $100,000 lawsuit.

The Coral Springs News reached out to the Coral Springs Police Department for comment on March 10 but did not receive an immediate response.

Fenelus’ lawyer has demanded a trial by jury in county court. The city’s response has not been filed into the court’s electronic recordkeeping system as of March 10.
