An overnight shooting near Royal Palm Boulevard and Riverside Drive left one man dead as Coral Springs police continue investigating the incident, continuing an upward trend of gun violence in the city.

Just before 3 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, residents around Coral Springs Tower Club reported hearing multiple gunshots, according to news reports.

A SWAT team arrived shortly afterward and found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, a CSPD spokesperson told the Coral Springs News. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene.

As of late Thursday morning, police say there was no threat to the public, and all lanes of traffic on Royal Palm Boulevard and Riverside Drive were open.

Officials have not shared additional details. The investigation is ongoing.

Somerset Academy, a K-8 charter school, announced early Thursday that it would close for the day as a result of the incident and ongoing police investigation, officials said in a Facebook post.

The incident follows the April 1 murder of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer and the April 16 attempted murder of another woman, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend.

It’s a sharp increase from last year, when Coral Springs Police reported zero homicides and one high-profile death, reflecting an ongoing local and national decrease in violent crime.
