Small plane crashes near Pembroke Pines hospital with two aboard, police say
A plane crash in Pembroke Pines prompted police and fire rescue teams to respond and assist with the wreckage, according to authorities.
Officers and firefighters responded to 800 E. Cypress Drive on Friday, May 29, to find the remains of a light aircraft in a field just north of the South Florida State Hospital, the Pembroke Pines Police Department shared in an Instagram post.
The plane was a Cessna C172P that went down shortly after taking off from North Perry Airport around 11:30 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Its owner is listed as Hollywood-based Trajectory Aviation, LLC by the agency.
According to the FAA, two people were aboard the fixed wing, single-engine craft when it went down. All occupants were conscious and breathing, and no additional injuries were reported, added PPPD.
North Perry, which typically services flight training and light aircraft and is located approximately one mile from the crash site, has not responded to the Pembroke Pines News’ request for comment as of May 29.
Details on what caused the crash are unknown. However, a police scanner shows the plane may have been experiencing mechanical issues.
According to FlightAware, the plane left North Perry Airport at 7:57 a.m. and landed at Okeechobee County Airport at 9:04 a.m. It quickly jetted off again from Okeechobee at 9:41 a.m. and was on its way to North Perry.
Insignia on the plane’s empennage also appears to show the aircraft is part of Blue Sky Aviation, a flight school based at North Perry and headed by Pembroke Pines commissioner Jay Schwartz, who serves as the school’s president and chief operating officer.
Blue Sky is highlighted as a partner flight school on Trajectory Aviation’s website.
Schwartz has not responded to the Pembroke Pines News’ request for comment as of May 29.
