Florida’s back-to-school tax holiday starts July 20. Here’s what you can save on
Another school year is usually followed by another slew of costs tied to school materials.
Florida’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday aims to ease that burden.
Families can purchase new clothes, shoes, tech and school-related gear tax-free for a month starting Monday, July 20, but with restrictions.
Broward County Public Schools students head back to campus for the 2026-2027 academic year on Monday, Aug. 10.
Florida has implemented several sales tax holidays, including seasonal exemptions for items related to hunting, fishing and camping.
What items qualify under the sales tax?
Last summer, the state made its back-to-school sales tax holiday permanent every summer. This year’s event runs July 20-Aug. 20.
The items included during the sale period:
- Clothing, footwear, wallets, bags, handbags, backpacks, fanny packs and diaper bags with a price of $100 or less
- Certain school supplies with a price of $50 or less
- Learning aids and jigsaw puzzles with a price of $30 or less
- Personal computers and certain computer-related accessories with a price of $1,500 or less, when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use.
Here are some items not included:
- Briefcases, suitcases or garment bags.
- Watches, watch bands, jewelry, umbrellas and handkerchiefs.
- Skis, swim fins, rollerblades and skates.
- Clothing items with a price of more than $100.
- Any school supply item with a price of more than $50.
- Books that are not otherwise exempt.
- Computers and computer-related accessories with a price of more than $1,500.
- Cellphones, video game consoles, digital media receivers or devices that are not primarily designed to process data.
- Computers and computer-related accessories purchased for commercial purposes.
- Rentals of eligible items.
- Repairs or alterations of eligible items.
- Sales of eligible items within a theme park or entertainment complex, public lodging establishment or airport.
