Veterans Day celebrations and major donations: Weekend happenings in Coral Springs

As Veterans Day approaches, Coral Springs and other cities are finding ways to celebrate those who served in the U.S. military. Festivities include live music and food trucks for all, as well as resource fairs and speical honors for those who served.

The weekend will also feature several events for other causes, including support for Caribbean nations impacted by Hurricane Melissa, dog adoptions and one of the city’s central wildlife reserves.

And, as always, events for numerous interest groups from live music to Magic: The Gathering continue through the weekend.

Here’s what you need to know for Friday, Nov. 7, through Sunday, Nov. 9:

All weekend

Hurricane Melissa relief drive

The City of Coral Springs is collecting and delivering a number of items to impacted areas. Officials are requesting the following items:

  • Utility: Tarps, solar-powered lights, work gloves
  • Personal care: Wash cloths, soap, shampoo, body wash, feminine and other personal hygeine products, baby wipes, diapers
  • Health: Hand sanitizer, first aid kits, face masks, gloves

No clothing, linens or perishable goods will be accepted.

Dropoffs will be accepted at the following locations:

  • Coral Springs City Hall Lobby: Weekdays, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Public Safety Building Lobby: Any day, any time

Pine and Palm Market

Head to the Coral Springs Museum of Art to shop jewelry, ceramic dishware, artwork, accessories and more items handmade by over 20 local creatives ahead of the holiday shopping season. Vendors will be located throughout the museum, allowing visitors to view works from the museum’s current exhibition, Transitions.

The market will be open on Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking and entry are free. View the full list of vendors on the Coral Springs Museum of Art events website here.

Friday

Patriotic Community Concert (5:30 to 9:30 p.m.)

Enjoy food trucks and free live music to celebrate military veterans at City Hall. Coldplay tribute band Life in Color will open the show, followed by Eagles tribute band Hotel California. Veterans will be honored with a VIP seating area and honor walk.

Saturday

Soldier Rush 5K (7:15 a.m.)

Up for a physical challenge for a good cause? Test your endurance, strength, speed and dexterity at Soldier Rush in Parkland, which aims to mirror the “military bootcamp experience.”

Tickets are $125 and include a free pass to a Tough Mudder or Spartan race for all finishers. Proceeds benefit Fitness on a Mission, a 501(c)(3) helping veterans, first responders and their families. Learn more here.

Bark in the Park adoption event (9 a.m. to noon)

Good Karma Pet Rescue of South Florida will host a dog celebration and adoption event in Firefighters Park. Visit for on-site vendors, veterinarians, a caricature artist, and photo booth, as well as pups looking for their forever homes. Learn more on Facebook here.

Career Compass: Mapping out Your Future (10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)

Tweens and teens can learn about the working world at this Northwest Regional Library event, in partnership with Project Leadership. Learn more and register on the library’s events website here.

Job fair at New Springs Church (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

Regional charity Better Together is partnering with New Springs Church to host a job fair with the primary goal of connecting local businesses and job seekers.

Caring for the Caregiver (11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

Feeling tired or stressed? This free workshop at the Northwest Regional Library aims to give caregivers self-care tools and resources that can help avoid burnout and health crises in the future. Reserve your spot on the library’s events website here.

Oil painting workshop (1 to 4 p.m.)

Learn expert techniques and unleash your creative side through oil paint at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. Lisa Botto Lee, an internationally-recognized artist with expertise in introspective animal and human portraits.

Sawgrass Nature Center 30th Anniversary Gala (6 to 11 p.m.)

The Sawgrass Nature Center and Wildlife Rescue Hospital will celebrate three decades of service at the Country Club of Coral Springs with food, drinks, entertainment, raffles, and live and silent auctions.

Tickets range from $110 to $125 per person. Sponsor packages start at $750. Both are available on the Sawgrass Center’s ticketing platform here.

Sunday

Jewish genetic disease testing at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (9:15 to 11 a.m.)

Planning to start a family? The Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases, the Office of Community Health and the Jewish Federation of Broward County will host an education and screening event at Congregation Kol Tivah. Boots for the Brave (1 to 5 p.m.)

The Parks Foundation of Broward County invites residents to enjoy food trucks, activities for kids and live music from local country band Whisky Six. Plus, veterans will have access to resource tables, disc golf, fishing and the opportunity to watch a pinning ceremony. Learn more here.
