Ex-PTO treasurer stole $44,000 from Imagine Charter in Coral Springs, cops say
The former treasurer of the Parent Teacher Organization for Imagine Charter School at Broward has been arrested on accusations she embezzled over $44,000, according to Coral Springs police.
Rebecca Sanon, 51, was booked in jail Oct. 22 on a charge of second-degree grand theft, exceeding $20,000 but less than $100,000. She was released the same day on $20,000 bond.
She didn’t have attorney information available in Broward court records on Oct. 24. The Coral Springs News reached out to Imagine for comment on the arrest Oct. 24 but did not immediately receive a response.
Sanon was in charge of funds for the Coral Springs charter school’s PTO from August 2020 until the summer of 2024, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Other members of the PTO discovered missing funds when they were planning a PTO event in July 2024 and realized only about $1,000 remained in the account, police said.
They believed $17,000 was missing, but detectives said they later learned Sanon had stolen over $44,000 from the account in a combination of ATM withdrawals, Zelle transactions and debit card purchases at Walmart, Publix, Sam’s Club and restaurants.
Records showed Sanon used the PTO card to pay her Florida Power & Light bill and make other unauthorized purchases, but the bulk of the embezzled money came from cash withdrawals at ATMs, according to investigators.
Sanon was captured on surveillance footage conducting some of these ATM transactions, police reported.
The PTO board said “cash back transactions are never approved” and there wouldn’t be a reason to withdraw money for official business, according to the affidavit.
Two detectives interviewed Sanon in January at her Tamarac home, where she identified herself in a photo taken during an ATM transaction, police said.
“She then confirmed withdrawing funds from the ATM because she was having a difficult time,” detectives wrote in the affidavit. “She used the money to avoid being evicted and pay her rent, which was caused by a ‘bad situation.’”
A warrant for her arrest was issued Oct. 6, records show.
