Loxahatchee Road open to traffic, but construction continues. Here’s the update
North Parkland residents and drivers along Loxahatchee Road are facing another year of road work as state and local officials continue improvements along the corridor.
But months of full closures and detours have ended. Here’s what you need to know.
Why is Lox Road under construction?
The road improvement plan was first adopted in December 2009, when the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization’s board approved its 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan. It’s part of a set of broader goals: improving safety, accessibility and connectivity in the region, as well as connecting more hikers and bikers to the Conservation Levee Greenway via the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.
Planned improvements include the following:
- Upgraded asphalt, pavement markings, drainage, lighting, signage
- Added and improved guardrails
- Widened road to accomodate bike lanes
- Created sidewalk on the south side of the road
- Added landscaped roundabouts to improve traffic flow at Nob Hill Road, University Drive and Parkside Drive
- Additional left turn lane towards S.R. 7/U.S. 441
What’s been completed so far?
As of Dec. 1, the Florida Department of Transportation says the multi-year project is 65% complete. Drivers can now travel the length of Loxahatchee Road without the major detours seen in past months.
Two sets of lane delineators — tube-shaped plastic poles, typically bright yellow — have also been added near the entrances of Watercrest and Four Seasons, two communities whose residents had long complained that road work caused cars to make dangerous turns into their neighborhoods.
What should I expect this month?
Partial closures and segments of road work will continue in the coming months. Check out our interactive map for more information on how drivers in Parkland, Coral Springs and West Boca could be affected.
Construction on the $33 million project began in 2023 and is expected to end in early 2027, according to the FDOT.
