Coral Springs High School girls basketball coach Brenton Hankerson allegedly rented out the Colts’ gym outside of the proper channels, pocketing nearly $6,000, according to authorities.

Two Broward County high school basketball coaches, including Coral Springs High School’s Brenton Hankerson, were arrested Wednesday after allegedly renting out schools’ gyms for their own financial gain, investigators say.

“Both employees in question were arrested by Broward Schools Police as part of an investigation into the improper use of district facilities for personal gain,” wrote John J. Sullivan, the Broward School District Chief of Staff, in an email to the Coral Springs News Dec. 11. “The Superintendent maintains a zero-tolerance stance on public corruption, and both employees will be subject to termination.”

According to an arrest affadavit obtained from the Broward County Schools Police Department, officers found that 43-year-old Hankerson, the girls basketball coach, had gone around the proper channels to host paid basketball tournaments at Coral Springs High. The document states that he received payments totaling $5,950 between April and June 2025 for these tournaments.

Officials estimate that Coral Springs High could have rented the facilities out for $11,805, bringing the total dollar value of the scheme to $17,755.

According to LinkedIn, Hankerson started working as a security specialist with the School Board of Broward County in December 2012 and became a Coral Springs High School girls basketball coach in February 2013. He has led the team to multiple district championships in the last several years.

Blanche Ely High School boys basketball coach Henry McNabb, 42, was also taken into custody Wednesday, facing similar charges on accusations that he rented out the Blanche Ely and Hollywood Hills High School gyms for basketball tournaments.

Police said McNabb was discovered when an individual resevered one of the gyms for a graduation May 31, only to walk in that day to find a basketball tournament going on. The man said the chairs he had set up the night before were gone, and the graduation sign on stage was damaged, according to the affidavit. He called the sheriff’s office and a school administrator, who reportedly didn’t know about the tournament, police said.

McNabb arrived, and the tournament was shut down, according to investigators. He reportedly made $5,200 to host the tournaments, while both schools lost what could have been $12,920 in facility rental fees, according to the report.

Both men are charged with organized scheme to defraud ($20,000 or less) and grand theft in excess of $10,000 but less than $20,000.
