Second Coral Springs High coach arrested for alleged gym rental scheme, cops say
A third Broward County high school basketball coach was arrested and faces allegations that he participated in a months-long scheme to illegally rent out the Coral Springs High School gym for personal profit, authorities said.
Donald Calloway, an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Coral Springs High School, was arrested on Friday, Dec. 12, and faces multiple second-degree felony charges relating to organized theft and fraud, according to a Broward Schools Police Department arrest affadavit.
A day earlier, Coral Springs High girls basketball head coach Brenton Hankerson and Blanche Ely High boys basketball head coach Henry McNabb were arrested in connection with the scheme, police said.
According to his recently released arrest affidavit, Calloway, 50, was the point of contact for basketball associations that wished to rent the Coral Springs High gymnasium, officials said.
Leaders of those associations sent Zelle payments to Hankerson, who handed a portion over to Calloway, according to the affidavit.
Hankerson allegedly made $3,150 from the arrangement, while Calloway walked away with $2,800.
Officials estimate that Coral Springs High lost $17,755 in potential revenue, as its rates are higher than those Hankerson and Calloway allegedly offered, authorities said.
Hankerson and Calloway are charged with organized scheme to defraud and grand theft.
