Driver pulls knife over man’s comments about his driving, Coral Springs cops say
A comment about one man’s alleged poor driving escalated to armed threats captured on video, according to Coral Springs police.
The victim told police that he saw a driver, later identified as 27-year-old Matthew Duran, driving recklessly on Valentine’s Day, police wrote in a probable cause affidavit.
Duran, a Modera resident, parked his car outside his apartment building at 3210 N. University Drive at around 6:30 p.m., then walked by the victim, who made a comment about his driving, the victim told police.
In response, Duran pulled a switchblade on the other man, then a witness started recording the interaction on her phone, according to investigators.
Police said the video shows Duran pointing the knife at the victim from a few feet away as they argued, then as the victim tried walking away, Duran followed him, still holding the knife and threatening him.
The victim called 911 and said Duran threatened to slit his throat, describing the incident as road rage, according to the affidavit.
When officers arrived, they reported finding the knife in Duran’s pocket and handcuffed him. He denied threatening the other man, saying he pulled the knife in self-defense, police wrote in the affidavit.
Duran was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, and he bonded out of Broward jail Feb. 17, records show.
His attorney information wasn’t available in court records as of Feb. 19.
