A woman was shot and seriously injured Thursday afternoon behind a Coral Springs strip mall, police say. A man is now in custody and faces multiple charges for the alleged crime.

Just hours after being called to Coral Springs Charter School on reports that a student had brought a gun to campus, the Coral Springs Police Department was called to the 7600 block of West Sample Road — near McDonald’s and Fine Furniture — around 3 p.m. on April 16 for reports of gunfire in the area, according to a CSPD Facebook post.

Officers found an adult woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to Broward Health North with “serious injuries,” police said.

Police arrested Abdul Perez, 49, Thursday night. He faces multiple charges, including attempted premeditated murder, aggravated battery and evidence tampering.

Cellphone video of the incident obtained by NBC6 showed a man in an orange landscaping shirt exit a DynaServ company van and approach a woman in a gray SUV. In another video, from CBS4, at least five gunshots could be heard.

Officials say the victim and Perez knew one another, and that the incident is being considered as domestic-related, although they declined to share their relationship.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Coral Springs Police Department at 954-344-1800.

The shooting came less than a day before the memorial service for Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, who was allegedly shot and killed by her husband, Stephen Bowen, in the early hours of April 1.
