Day of Giving offers ways to give back in Coral Springs. Here are details
Want to help neighbors in need, but don’t know where to start? An upcoming event will bring several local nonprofits together in one place to celebrate the Coral Springs Rotary Club’s Day of Giving.
The club, whose motto is “service above self,” plans to bring members and residents together from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 16, at New Dawn Community Church as it collects food, clothing and shoes for three charities serving South Florida:
- Royal Palm Christian Church’s food pantry will accept nonperishable goods for its weekly grocery distribution, which regularly feeds over 80 families. Administrators expect the number to increase as new SNAP restrictions go into effect.
- In Jacob’s Shoes, a charity that provides free shoes, socks, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear to South Florida kids in need, will also be represented. The organization is part of the larger Jacob S. Zweig Foundation, created in memory of the 17-year-old was stabbed to death in November 2008.
- The final organization at the event will be The Shirt Off My Back. It was founded by Thomas Volturo in 2014, when he began collecting clothes and hygeine products to give away to unhoused people in the tri-county area. While operating out of the trunk of his minivan, Volturo has also secured lasting partnerships with businesses, hospitals and nonprofits to provide assistance to all who need it.
The program is a longstanding tradition for the Rotary Club, which regularly hosts donation drives and fundraisers centered on children and veterans.
