Life Time Fitness officials and city representatives presented final designs of the two-story, 86,750-square-foot luxury gym during Wednesday night’s Coral Springs City Commission meeting.

The business, marketed as an “athletic country club,” will be located on the abandoned Heron Bay Golf Club property, which caught fire in December.

It went through several rounds of redesigning with the city’s architectural committee and public meetings with residents since it was initially proposed in 2024.

Former mayor Roy Gold said that while he found the site design beautiful, he wondered why the majority of the property was dedicated exclusively to parking.

“So much of the land is taken up with asphalt and that’s not a benefit to the city of Coral Springs,” Gold said during the May 20 meeting, asking officials to consider the limited amount of real estate available in the city.

Residents, including Lorin Schlang and Erick Nyatenya, also shared concerns about noise and traffic, which have continued throughout the design process.

“The beauty is there, the landscaping is there, but the plan is all visual,” Schlang said. “We are a close neighborhood, and we respect each other, and all we want to do, if Lifetime is going to be our neighbor, and a very, very close neighbor, we want them to respect us as well.”

Commissioners discussed developers’ landscaping decisions, designed to dampen sound from the site’s pools and pickleball courts, before unanimously approving the plan. The second hearing will take place at the next City Commission meeting on June 17.

“A lot has changed in a positive way,” Commissioner Shawn Cerra said to developers and city staff. “I do want to commend you guys on the effort that you did put in to reach out to the community, house public forums, private conversations, because our residents’ voice is very important to us, and I do feel on this project from the beginning to the end, you guys pivoted and did a great job. So, thank you.”
