Juneteenth celebration at Coral Springs art museum to feature live music, food
Looking for a way to commemorate Juneteenth this year? This family-friendly event in Coral Springs could be just for you.
The Coral Springs Museum of Art will host its celebration of African-Americans’ freedom from slavery from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 19, in the museum’s lobby.
Live DJs and other performers will be on throughout the evening, along with snacks and treats from local businesses.
Last year’s event also featured a photo booth, poster-making activity, book sale, opportunities to chat with nonprofits and government offices, remarks from elected officials and a step team performance.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth — a mashup of “June” and “Nineteenth” — marks the day in 1865 when troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to liberate the slaves being held there over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
It was declared a federal holiday in 2021 and is considered the nation’s longest-running African-American holiday.
Many former Confederate states also have their own days celebrating Black people’s liberation from slavery — including Florida’s “Emancipation Day” on May 20.
Registration for this year’s celebration in Coral Springs is not required. Free parking is available in the Coral Springs Center for the Arts lot.
