Coral Springs on track for no homicides in 2025, cops say. When did that last happen?
For the first time in years, Coral Springs is poised to close the year without a homicide, police said.
Although an official homicide count will not be finalized until the department completes its year-end crime report, no deaths within the city have been classified as homicides as of Monday, Dec. 29, police spokesman Sgt. James Kaban told the Coral Springs News.
This positions Coral Springs for a significant decline in its homicide total compared to previous years.
In 2024, homicides spiked to four. In 2023 and 2022, there were two murders each year.
The last time there were no murders in Coral Springs was 2021, and before that it was 2017, according to City-Data.com.
Meanwhile, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has reported more than 40 homicides within its jurisdiction during the same period, according to agency representatives, the office told the Coral Springs News.
But the year wasn’t without high-profile deaths in Coral Springs: The most notable case involved 38-year-old Jessica Lloyd, a nurse who was found Aug. 25 face down in a canal near her home in the 9900 block of NW 15th Court.
Prior to Lloyd’s death, neighbors reported hearing a woman — believed to be Lloyd — screaming outside her home, allegedly shouting, “My husband is trying to kill me!”
Her husband, Jeffrey Ernest Evans, 43, a retired lieutenant from the Davie Fire Rescue Department, had called 911 to report that his wife was experiencing a “mental break” and needed assistance.
Evans was arrested and charged with domestic battery. He has bonded out but must wear an ankle monitor.
Lloyd’s case has drawn attention to domestic violence issues, with police pledging to continue their focus on these types of incidents.
