Coral Springs gym rental scandal grows with 6 people now charged. Here’s the latest
A financial scandal involving Broward County basketball coaches continues to unfold with new charges filed against former Coral Springs High School athletic director Brandon Wesley, while two of the school’s former coaches had their charges downgraded from felonies to misdemeanors.
Court records allege that six men across five schools intentionally evaded proper channels for reserving and paying for school recreational facilities, instead pocketing profits from deals with regional basketball organizations.
Between the five men with Coral Springs ties involved in the alleged scheme, it appears that less than $15,000 changed hands over about three months.
But, prosecutors are also considering the district’s lost revenue, which officials estimated to be between $7,000 and $11,800 per case.
Former Coral Springs High coaches, administrator implicated
Coral Springs High coaches Donald Calloway and Brenton Hankerson were arrested for their alleged role in the scheme in December, when prosecutors alleged they rented school facilities to Point Guard Athletics and Hoopfluence for basketball clinics and tournaments, pocketing the money.
Investigators estimate Hankerson made $3,150 from the arrangement, while Calloway walked away with $2,800.
The pair were originally charged with grand theft and organized fraud, both third-degree felonies. They entered not guilty pleas, only for the state to drop the case in March and file misdemeanor theft charges instead.
Calloway and Hankerson were placed in a county diversion program, according to court records. Their hearings will take place in June and July, respectively.
Wesley, the former Coral Springs High athletic director, was arrested on similar charges on May 7.
Court documents state that he was connected to the alleged scheme through Zelle transfers for “use and cleaning” of the gymnasiums, sent by another coach. Records indicate he received a total of $650.
Coaches at other schools also charged
The investigation continued into this year with the arrests of Shaune Cannon, a former behavior technician at Forest Glen Middle School and coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, and Cedric Smith, a Coral Springs resident and former coach at Boyd Anderson High in Lauderdale Lakes.
Henry McNabb, who led the Pompano Beach Blanche Ely High boys basketball team to a state championship in 2025, was arrested around the same time as Calloway and Hankerson for allegedly renting school facilities to MJM Sports and The Basketball Alliance Associations.
Court records show that he still faces two felony charges for grand theft and organized fraud.
