Basketball enthusiasts in north Coral Springs will have to wait a few more weeks to break in the city’s newest blacktop court, city officials say, due to delays in laying and painting the asphalt court at Pride Promoters Park.

Officials previously said they expected the enhancements to be completed by February. According to the city’s website for the project, the park is now scheduled to be completed by the end of April.

Sayona Khandwalla, Coral Springs’ media relations coordinator, said that there was “a contractor delay” in laying the new asphalt basketball court, which requires at least 30 days to cure before court markings can be painted.

Other upgrades include a “modern, accessible” playground, outdoor fitness equipment for all ages and a bronze scultpure by internationally acclaimed duo Gillie and Marc.

The project was largely funded through a $225,000 federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the CDBG program aims to help cities, counties and states “develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.”

Other projects funded through this grant include wastewater treatment in rural South Carolina, a medical respite center for adults experiencing homelessness in Illinois and a co-op grocery store in a North Carolina food desert.

There will be a grand opening once all of the Pride Promoters Park upgrades are completed, Khandwalla told the Coral Springs News via email. However, the date and details have not been finalized as of March 16.
