Man claims self-defense in fatal Coral Springs shooting over gold chain, cops say
New details have emerged in the May 14 fatal shooting at the Coral Springs Tower Club apartment complex, which resulted in the death of 18-year-old Dania Beach resident Khameran Jackson.
Following his arrest for evidence tampering, T’vano Rolle, 22, told Coral Springs police that he was involved in the incident that killed Jackson, but that it was an act of self-defense.
Rolle told investigators that on May 13, he, Jackson, and an unidentified man traveled to and from a music studio before they returned to the apartment complex to spend time at the pool.
While there, Rolle said Jackson and the unidentified man asked to take photos with Rolle’s gold Cuban-link chain. Depending on the quality and thickness of the jewelry, one piece can be worth thousands of dollars.
He alleged that the two then attempted to steal the chain in the early hours of May 14, resulting in a shootout after all parties drew their guns, according to an affidavit.
After the shooting, Rolle stored his gun in a backpack, retreated to his apartment and placed the bag in his closet, his arrest report says.
The Coral Springs Police Department Communications Center received a 911 call reporting the sound of approximately six to seven gunshots in the area of Riverside Drive at 2:52 a.m. Minutes later, an Uber drive flagged down an officer and directed him toward a deceased man, later identified as Jackson.
The officer wrote that Jackson had a gunshot wound to his upper right torso. Coral Springs Fire Rescue officials declared him dead at 3:22 a.m.
During the investigation, officers say they also recovered shell casings from the pool deck and a rifle from the bottom of the pool.
Rolle faces charges for evidence tampering, not for homicide, as of May 19. Coral Springs police say that no one has been arrested for homicide in relation to the ongoing investigation.
